Southern Illinois is expanding its local energy leadership, a testament to its economic development vision.
EDP Renewables North America recently announced the completion of two solar projects generating 250 megawatts of clean energy. Hickory and Wolf Run Solar Parks will produce enough electricity to power 62,800 average Illinois homes and support economic growth in the communities they serve.
In addition to their clean, reliable electricity, they deliver job creation, landowner payments, and increased tax revenue for local communities.
Rural communities often have missed out on the economic benefits of energy development, but these projects are changing that. Over their lifetimes, Hickory and Wolf Run will contribute millions of dollars in tax revenue to local governments, supporting schools, roads, and emergency services. More than $12.2 million was spent in the communities during construction, benefiting nearby restaurants, hotels, gas stations and other retailers and service providers.
In addition, Wolf Run and Hickory will pay an estimated $4.8 million to landowners, offering farmers and their families a stable income in an unpredictable agricultural market.
The Hickory Solar Park was brought to life through Volt Energy Utility, which ensures that projects such as Hickory support rural and urban communities from Appalachia to Atlanta disproportionately impacted by pollution and vulnerable to climate change.
Investing in renewable energy strengthens communities and offers lasting benefits.
These projects exemplify how clean energy can drive both economic growth and sustainability, bringing us one step closer to a stronger, more resilient future.
